FAQs

A domain name is essentially an address for your website.

Each website’s IP address is linked to a domain, a name easy to remember and type in your browser.

Check out our Ultimate domain name guide to understand what domains are and how they work.

Also called Top-Level Domains (TLDs), domain extensions are the last part of a domain name, located after the dot.

E.g.: In eurodns.com “.com” is the domain extension.

You can buy your domain through a registrar, the company that manages the reservation of domain names. As an example, EuroDNS is a registrar.

The registrar takes care of the initial registration process, but also provides support with domain renewal or transfer. They are in charge of providing technical support to registrants experiencing issues related to their domain. No registrar sells all domain extensions, so you may have to check more than one registrar to find your preferred TLD. We recommend comparing the offers from several registrars whose websites you can easily find on Google.

It depends. Each domain has its own price that can typically go from as cheap as €1,00 to hundreds of euros per year.

A good domain name is easy to remember, simple and not too specific. It is good practice to also register similar domains to your main one to protect your brand against hackers.

Ensure to enter correct registration information, as it will be published in the WHOIS database and visible to anyone who would like to contact you. If you enter the wrong information, you won’t receive notifications when your domain is about to expire.

Before registering a domain, you should check it for trademark infringement to ensure there are no conflicts of interest with existing trademarks.

Here is are some tips on How to choose the perfect domain & extension for your website.

You can usually register a domain for anywhere between one to ten years, but some domains have a minimum registration period of 2 years.

Premium domains are high-quality domains an entity has already registered with the aim of making a profit when selling it. These domains are more expensive, short, contain keywords, have a trustworthy TLD, and most importantly: a strong domain history with link juice and good traffic stats.

Example of premium domain:

  • Carinsurance.com
  • Hotels.com

A second-level domain is the part of the domain name that is located to the left of the domain extension.

e.g.: in example.com, “example” is the SLD.

It is recommended practice to register variations of your domain name. You should register common misspellings of your domain, singular, plural and hyphenated versions of your name, as well as other domain extensions. For more information, please download our free Domain Management Guide.

Whois is an Internet record listing that shares information about the owner of a domain and how to contact them. Unless a registrant chooses to hide their Whois information, it will be accessible to the public.

ICANN stands for Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It is a non-profit based in California and created in 1998. Its goal is to manage the domain name system, root servers, IP addresses.

We recommend having all your domains registered with a single registrar also offering extensive domain services such as web hosting, SSL certificates, DNS services and professional email. This will help you protect your brand against cybersquatting and other online threats. To know more about domain management, don’t hesitate to consult our dedicated blog.

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a protocol for website security. It protects online communication and transactions using the strongest encryption available. An SSL certificate validates the identity of your website, rather like a passport. Once activated it displays a padlock icon and https:// in your URL. These trust indicators let your customers know that your site is genuine, protected, and private.

As an online retailer, it’s your duty to protect the information that your customers share with you. An SSL certificate on your website scrambles or encrypts the traffic between a web server and a web browser. This means your customers' personal information is secure. Without SSL, any computer can intercept and steal credit card numbers, usernames, and passwords.

Google has stated that HTTPS will be a ranking signal. Excellent news - it means your website’s page ranking will be boosted if you have an SSL certificate.

A custom email address including your domain name, can help your business to establish a professional image, build brand recognition, and improve your overall online presence.
